I often feel that my family’s Advent and Christmas traditions have been swallowed up by travel obligations. We are always ‘somewhere else’ for Christmas. My wife and I have never spent a Christmas in our own home. We have never experienced a Christmas Eve candle light service in our home church. We have never opened presents at our own Christmas tree. Sometimes I think that my family has sacrificed too much. Why are we always the ones who have to be ‘somewhere else’? But the answer to that question is easy; we travel to connect with family. For us, Advent is a time of preparation to renew love for family, and for me, love of family is a symbol of the experience of the love of God, which, I believe, is the true meaning of Advent.
