The Presbyterian Church USA Book of Order states, “The ministry of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of compassion, witness, and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lost, the friendless, the oppressed, those burdened by unjust policies or structures, or anyone in distress.” At First Presbyterian, deacons are elected for three years. They serve in the capacities listed above as called upon to do so. Likewise, each member of the congregation can request a deacon “friend” to visit them on a monthly basis, keeping their link with the congregation alive and meaningful. The deacons also sponsor two senior luncheons during the year, to which all, regardless of their age, are invited to attend. These two luncheons are held in the spring and fall, on a designated date and immediately following the Sunday morning worship service.
