In 2003 this congregation made a commitment to remain in the downtown area as a church that offered excellence in traditional worship, Christian education, and outreach to the greater Cedar Rapids community and the world. A vision for a renovated space that could strengthen the church’s ministry was put forth, and the congregation moved boldly forward. The first half of that vision was completed in 2005 with the renovation of the sanctuary and the enclosure of the atrium. The second half of the vision, the renovation of the Christian Education building, was anticipated to occur upon fiscal completion of the first phase.
In 2008 two events occurred: the note on the first phase was paid and downtown Cedar Rapids flooded – including the basement of First Presbyterian. While still remembering the promise to enter a second phase, we made a decision to instead turn our energies and resources toward helping to rebuild our community.
Now more than ever, we are committed to being a downtown church with a heart for the city. Even as the inner city areas of Cedar Rapids are experiencing renewal, our congregation is experiencing new vitality – with new faces, new ministries and new ways of reaching out in our downtown neighborhood.
Our facilities, however, have moved in the opposite direction. Areas of concern in our infrastructure fifteen years ago are now dire needs that must be addressed. Now is the time to remember the vision and fulfill the promise made years ago.
Now is the time to say “We’re In!”
